(1 Sep 2014) NASA released CGI (computer-generated image) video on Monday of the sun emitting a mid-level solar flare.
The image of the flare, which erupted on the left side of the sun on August 24, was recorded by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory.
NASA's powerful telescopes captured beams of ultraviolet light from the flare and recorded them as electronic signals.
They were then translated into animated images by specialised computer programmes.
Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation, which according to NASA, are not harmful to humans on Earth, as the radiation from a flare cannot pass through the Earth's atmosphere.
However, very intense flares can disrupt GPS (global positioning system) and communications signals because they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer through which these signals travel.
