Kadir van Lohuizen (Utrecht, NL, 1963) lives and works in Amsterdam. Selected for On the Move: the multimedia project Vía PanAm (2011-2013).
ABOUT VÍA PANAM
His visual investigation of contemporary migration in the Americas took photojournalist Kadir van Lohuizen on a vast, 40,000 km journey along the Pan-American Highway. Starting in the far south of Chile, he crossed fifteen countries before reaching his final destination at Deadhorse, Alaska. Wishing to improve public understanding of migration and tell the stories of countless individual migrants, Van Lohuizen decided against the traditional photo essay form; in dialogue with producer Paradox, he turned Vía PanAm into a wide-ranging multimedia project. For the first time in his career, he reported directly on what he saw on his travels in radio broadcasts, a blog, a newspaper column and an iPad app. In the Vía PanAm app, fragments of his journal alternate with sets of photos and video images. Van Lohuizen’s journey unfolds from day to day as he reveals the everyday lives of Peruvian women employed in Chilean households, Iraqi refugees in the United States and many other migrants in search of a better life.
