You can find more inspirational poems like this in my book, "A Thin Book of Fat Poems: 50 Wise & Humorous Poems for 'Aha' Moments". It is a collection of simple, yet psychologically sophisticated poems that portray a journey towards the empowerment. This book is full of clever insights, humor, and whimsical, colorful illustrations.
A student from the University of Southern California asked me for an interview. She had to write an essay and chose to base it on my poem, "YOU CAN". She felt that this poem empowered her. Her thoughts inspired me to make this short video and make it available for anybody who stands on the crossroads of life and could use some empowerment.
One of the questions she asked was if my process of creating this poem was any different than other poems I have written. An excerpt of my answer is at the beginning of this video. It belongs to the collections of poems I have called "In Silence Received."
Every phrase in this poem challenges us to make a choice. In the end, we get clear, direct instructions for creating the life we want. People say, "Life is short." I don't really know whether my life is short or long. It does not matter. What matters is that I HAVE this life NOW. Every day I CAN live it to the fullest potential OR I "...can remain idle."
Every day I CAN ask myself, "What can I do today, that will make my tomorrow better?"
This poem made me aware that I was not living my life to its fullest. I knew deep inside what I wanted to do, but my life was buried under the expectations of others and my own critical voice. I call this poem "A Living Poem," as even though I wrote it 18 years ago, it is still affecting me today. When life challenges me, when I fall out of balance, when I feel that my artistic work is useless, or when I feel helpless, this poem whispers to me, "YOU CAN."
If you are aware of something you don't like in your environment or within yourself, please, make the decision to make it better and know that it CAN be changed.
