An audiobook reading of Chapter 1 of Dune by Frank Herbert. I was disappointed that the recent movie did not start in the same place as the book: with the introduction of the Bene Gesserit via the gom jabbar test. I also enjoy the straightaway emphasis on the anti-machine computer/AI culture in the Dune universe, which throws into starker relief Dune's strange human computers we are soon to learn much more about. This seemed like such an arresting way to plunge into the world of Dune that I wouldn't want the story begun any other way, but perhaps a movie doesn't lend itself to such a... psychological start.
