〰️ Revealing hidden worlds 〰️
This is a square metal plate vibrating at around 3000hz. As I pour sand over it, it reveals where it is moving. There is sound vibration propagating from the centre to the outer edges. As it hits the edges it is then reflected back in on itself. At certain frequencies there are standing waves, where the wavelength fits nicely in within the boundaries. This causes the waves to cancel each other out in parts and to amplify at other points, once it’s reflected. These points are the nodes and antinodes. Lower frequencies have a longer wavelength, so the patterns are less complex, as there is less crossing over of the reflected waves. Higher frequencies have shorter wavelengths, so there is more complexity. Because of the inconsistencies in the material I am using - it is a bit bent and not even in most places - so it causes its own pattern as it is uniquely responding to the frequency. Toward the end, I change the driving frequency and the pattern shifts. I added the music over the top, because in this demonstration it isn’t the nicest thing in the world to listen to ✨. Let me know if you have any questions! 🙏
(note you mean the little outline of where it goes? That’s from the same frequency just before this. The pattern went to the same points. But then I blew it off the plate. There is still residue from the sand, like fine dust that has stuck there as it was vibrating in place. I could have wiped it properly but didn’t want to move the balance. You see toward the end as I shift the frequency it moves.)

Chladni Patterns Poem - by @syneverse
“Little grains of sand Frolicking around Ordered to assemble
By harmonic waves of sound
"Little grains, attention! Assemble properly! Stand now in formation And resemble geometry!"
Those strong and standing waves Pulse and oscillate Pushing all the grains aside
As they resonate
And so the little grains Tremble and vibrate Forming lovely figures On a metal Chladni plate*
They find their antinodes Where they can safely stay Away from all the pushing And the shoving of the waves
But as the pulsing waves Change their frequency
The trembling grains must relocate And change their geometry
What act of sound and sand What show of resonance What dazzling display it is
This rare cymatic dance!”
