The Pandemic hit East Harlem hard, but we're Barrio tough. Because we couldn't gather at the actual tree site to shed some holiday lights, we took it online, showcasing 100 years of Puertorican "roots" & diversity that make up East Harlem's mosaic. Join us as we take a little tour through Spanish Harlem and shed some history on these streets and on our tree with decorations made from recycled materials curated by our own Genevive Andre, whose designs this year feature angel wings and tears for those who passed from covid19. Meet some of our local heroes, our essential workers, our distribution center for food here in East Harlem —serving 6,000 meals a day! Walk through these streets named for Nuyorican icons like Nicholassa Mohr as poet Willie Perdomo recites from his most recent book, "The Crazy Bunch," winner of the 2019 New York City Book Award in Poetry. Because legends marked these streets with their music & joy, we strut through Tito Puente; Machito Square; and Alfredo "Chocolate" Armenteros Way. Stroll through Charlie Palmeri Way as his brother Eddie salutes Spanish Harlem.
We sashay through murals and dance in glee and sorrow. We listen to the children's choirs and relish our past "parranda" hours.
Watch our video, spread the word, then come check out our tree @ 106 & Third. Help light the streets of El Barrio with our tree, with our songs, with our swing. Please like & share.
