In gas cartridge-operated units, extinguishing media is stored in the non-pressurized cylinder while the propellant carbon dioxide gas is stored in a separate cartridge inside the cylinder.
Let's understand the stepwise functioning of gas cartridge-type fire extinguishers so that you can operate these fire extinguishers in the event of a fire emergency.
Step 1 - A tamper seal and safety pin on the squeeze grip handle stops the fire extinguisher from being set off by accident. The user breaks the tamper seal and pulls out the safety pin to operate the fire extinguisher.
Step 2 - The operator directs the discharge nozzle towards the base of a fire.
Step 3 - The gas cartridge contains highly Compressed CO2 gas. When the operating lever is squeezed, the cartridge gets punctured.
Step 4 - The carbon dioxide gas moves from the punctured opening of the cartridge to the diffuser tube to create pressure inside the cylinder.
Step 5 - The pressure pushes the extinguishing agent up inside the siphon tube. The media discharges from the nozzle, passing through the hose.
Step 6 - Extinguishing agent douses the fire.
Gas cartridge-operated extinguishers are preferred in industrial use for their advantage of a simple recharge process, allowing an operator to discharge the extinguisher and recharge in a reasonable amount of time.
