Play is for sea otters and all animals to stay physically well. But physical activity isn’t the only form of play. It’s also necessary for the animal to exercise their minds just like we humans will solve puzzles, crosswords, or sudoku. In the wild, survival requires for the animal to be adept at problem solving. Especially when foraging for food.

When we have animals under human care we have an obligation to meet these same needs. So we simulate this by hiding their food inside of toys or freezing the food so they’ll need to crack into it like it was clam or oyster. The goal is to mimic natural behaviors but also keep their minds active and healthy. Another way we engage their minds is by teaching them behaviors.

And play isn’t just important for young pups. It also has tremendous health benefits for elderly animals. Play is a necessary activity, for all of us, regardless of age. It helps our bodies, our minds, and… keeps us "young at heart."
