(20 Aug 2018) ANNUAL ANIMATION FESTIVAL TACKLES GENDER IMBALANCE IN THE ANIMATED FILM INDUSTRY
The ninth annual international animation festival Anibar was held in Peja, Kosovo, last week, tackling gender imbalance in the animation industry.
Through films, workshops and panels, this year's event aimed to shine a light on inequality by highlighting ways to empower women within the industry.
"We are making progress but its not enough, so 'Women in Animation' set a goal a couple years ago of 50/50 by 2025 (year) and that's based on achieving it ideally in the world but primarily in the United States, said Kendra Haaland, spokesperson for Women in Animation. "It's still a very ambitious goal but if you don't set an ambitious goal you can't achieve it."
Haaland says progress can be achieved by "educating, advocating, promoting, challenging and insisting on change."
"It is happening, but it is slow so we have to do more," she said.
"People in hiring positions hire people like themselves. If we have more women hiring, more women will fill this roles. It just means we need more women to take on these roles and that's what we are trying to achieve right now through Women in Animation. Educating, advocating, promoting, challenging and insisting on change and it is happening but it's slow, so we have to do more."
Also attending the event was animator Amy Winfrey, who is known for her work on the hit shows "BoJack Horseman" and "South Park."
She said, "it is getting easier every year" for women in the industry.
"As more and more female artists join the industry it just makes everything easier. When I started at 'BoJack (Horseman)' I was the only female director and now there is more than one and we are able to support ourselves. We are able to mentor like storyboard artists that seem like they have potential to become directors and all of that just makes it easier to have more people at the studio."
Winfrey, who was holding a masterclass at the festival with fellow animator Peter Merryman, is "currently directing on a show called 'Tuca and Bertie.'"
"It's created by Lisa Hanawalt, she is the character designer from 'BoJack,' and it's a television show, an animated television show, that stars two female leads. So I am very excited about the fact that, besides being a much more female centered show, it's just really fun and really great, entertaining show."
The week-long event, which ran from 13 to 19 August, screened more than 200 movies from all over the world.
