(29 Jul 2015) The White House on Wednesday condemned the PKK (the Kurdistan Workers' Party) on Wednesday after the Kurdish rebels fired at buildings in Hakkari province, near Turkey's border with Iraq.
The Anadolu Agency Kurdish said the rebels had attacked police and judicial officials' lodgings with rockets in a further escalation of violence between the government and the insurgents.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Eric Schultz said Washington respected Turkey's right to defend itself.
Turkey's dramatic air campaign against the Islamic State and Kurdish forces has created a bit of a conundrum for President Barack Obama, who is leading the fight against one of Turkey's targets while relying heavily on the other target.
The US considers the PKK a terrorist group, but is supporting and equipping other Kurdish forces in Iraq and Syria that share its goal of routing the Islamic State group.
