Today, I am unboxing, setting up, and reviewing my favorite features of the Apple HomePod Mini!! There are many features that stand out from other smart speakers. I show many of the popular features that come with the HomePod mini, and then I give my analysis and overall opinion of this product’s features after a few days of use.
The HomePod mini costs $99, and you can find it on most major storefronts, including the Apple Store.
The sound quality was truly stunning to me, I was very impressed with it. Apple’s claim of “surprising sound quality for its size” seems to hold up very well.
HomePod Mini’s built-in assistant, Siri, can help you with many tasks and look up (some) information. You can ask for things like the weather, news in an audio format, the population or area of cities, starting timers or alarms with custom labels, and much more. You can always ask “Hey Siri, what can you do?” And you will get an extensive list of commands you can try.
Siri on HomePod has “personal requests.” When you have multiple people in your home, this allows each individual to start a command like sending a message, making a call, or adding a reminder, and doing it from their iPhone, using their unique information like lists in Reminders, and contacts. Siri recognizes your voice using Voice Recognition. This means that if it hears a voice it doesn’t recognize try to make a personal request, it will not respond, to protect your information. Personal requests are also secured because they only work when your iPhone is nearby. You can do things like sending messages, asking for new messages, making calls, picking up the phone, adding or editing reminders, lists, notes, or calendar events.
HomePod is also the gateway towards starting a smart home. HomePod serves as a Home Hub in the Apple Home app. This allows you to access and control smart accessories like smart plugs, smart lights, smart power strips, TVs, smart blinds, smart light switches, sensors, and more, even when you aren’t home. You can control these right from the Home App on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch. You can set up numerous automations and scenes on the Home App or by asking Siri.
A very useful security feature of the HomePod Mini is sound recognition. This allows the HomePod’s microphones to detect smoke or CO alarms and notify your Apple devices if one is detected. This can be EXTREMELY useful if you aren’t home. Without features like this, your house could be on fire and you wouldn’t even know it! Then you can “check-in” to your home. The HomePod’s microphones are used to record what it is hearing and relay that to your Apple devices when checking in. If you have a HomeKit camera in the same room, it will also show that while checking in. And the HomePod will notify anyone in the house that someone is checking in.
The HomePod mini works with all Apple devices including iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, and Apple TV, and the ability to AirPlay from devices to the HomePod and to play what’s on your TV speaker if you have an Apple TV. You can pair two HomePod minis together to create a stereo pair.
