BHA, also known as salicylic acid, is a great option when you suffer from clogged pores, blackheads or whiteheads primarily because they exfoliate within the pore breaking down dead cells within the pore.

BHA also works on the surface of the skin which is good for helping out with uneven skin tone, sun damage and red marks left behind after a breakout.

If you have dry skin, you should opt for something with a little more moisture in the formula like a lotion. If you have oily skin, you can choose a gel based or liquid-based BHA exfoliant.

AHA, also known as glycolic acid or lactic acid, is more effective for concerns that affect the surface of the skin. For example, dry skin, uneven skin tone and sun damage.

Because AHA only works on the surface of the skin and cannot penetrate deep into the pores, it doesn't do much for concerns like acne and breakouts.

Does AHA work for breakouts?
If you don't use any exfoliants at all, you can get some benefits from using an AHA exfoliant for breakouts. However, the results will not be as optimal as using a BHA exfoliant.

Can I use a BHA exfoliant if I have rosacea or eczema?
You can use a milder BHA formula because it does have anti-inflammatory properties.

Can you overuse your AHA or BHA exfoliant?
AHA and BHA exfoliants only work on the dead cells on the skin's surface and inside the pores and have no effect on the base layer of the skin where skin cells are produced.
