Twin rowers from New Zealand, Caroline and Georgina Evers-Swindell, had narrowly missed the qualification for the Sydney 2000 Olympics in the double sculls. But they went on to qualify for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, where they won gold in a close race over the German duo by a slim margin. Four years later, at Beijing 2008, they were ready to defend their Olympic title. Another German crew stood as their main rivals again, as well as a strong British team. As they crossed the finish line, neither crew knew who had crossed it first, and it took a long review to determine the winner. The judges announced that New Zealand won by the smallest of margins, 1/100 of a second after a 2km race.
It was the first time in Olympic history that the women's double sculls title had been successfully defended.
