The shear wall web is reinforced by two parallel grates, one on each face, which are held together using "S"-shaped transverse rebars (3). The vertical grate rebars (4) must have a diameter of at least Ø10, while the horizontal rebars (1&2) should be a minimum of Ø8. The "S"-shaped reinforcement (3) must be greater than or equal to 4Ø8/m².
The "S"-shaped rebars (3) provide buckling restraint to the longitudinal reinforcement, ensuring that the vertical and horizontal rebars continue to work together even after possible concrete spalling caused by intense earthquake events.
When vertical rebars are placed in an interior layer, the "S"-shaped link must restrain the horizontal rebars at the point of intersection with the vertical ones, or preferably wrap around both horizontal and vertical rebars simultaneously.
Alternatively, in a rectangular shear wall, the transverse reinforcement of the boundary columns and the horizontal web rebars (1&2) can be combined as two "L"-shaped parts, as depicted in the video.
