*Cottage Pie vs. Shepherd's Pie? What's the Difference?*
Many people get confused between these two dishes. They are very similar, with the only key difference being the type of meat used:
*Cottage Pie:* Made with ground beef.
*Shepherd's Pie:* Made with ground lamb.
So, if you prefer lamb over beef, simply swap the ground beef in this recipe for ground lamb and you'll have a delicious Shepherd's Pie!
*Easy and Customizable*
The beauty of Cottage Pie is its simplicity. It's made with everyday ingredients and is budget-friendly. Plus, it's freezer-friendly, making it a great option for meal prepping.
*Feel free to get creative! Here are some substitution ideas:*
*Protein:* Swap the beef with lamb (Shepherd's Pie!), chicken, turkey, or pork.
*Vegetables:* Don't have carrots or celery? No problem! Skip them or add other diced veggies like peas.
*Here's What You'll Need:*
The recipe is divided into three parts: the meat filling, the mashed potato topping, and the optional cheese crust.
*INGREDIENTS - FOR THE MEAT FILLING*
1 1/2 tbsp olive oil or more taste
3 Garlic cloves, minced or 1 tbsp of minced garlic purée
2 cups Onion, finely chopped
1 cup Carrot, finely chopped
1 cup Celery, finely chopped
1 cup Corn, frozen or can
3 cups ( 8 oz) Mushrooms, quartered.
2.2 lbs ( 1 kg) Beef Mince (ground beef), Extra Lean
1 ½ tbsp Flour (plain / all-purpose)
2 tbsp Tomato paste *[I mention 11 tbsp in the video but it should be 2 tbsps.]*
2 ½ cups (750 ml) Beef Stock / Broth , low sodium. Or Campbell’s® 30% Less Sodium Beef Broth with Red Wine and omit adding the red wine. But remember to add ½ cup of water as well.
1/2 cup (125 ml) Red Wine (or Water or extra Beef Stock)
1 Beef Bouillon cube , crumbled (stock cube, or 1 tsp stock powder or
2 tbsp Campbell's® Concentrated Beef Broth)
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce *[I mention 11 tbsp in the video but it should be 2 tbsps.]*
1 tsp dried Thyme (or 3 sprigs fresh thyme)
¼ tsp dried Rosemary
2 dried Bay leaves
1 tsp Salt
1/2 tsp Black Pepper
*INGREDIENTS - FOR MASHED POTATO TOPPING*
1.2 kg / 2.5 lb potatoes , peeled and cut into 2.5cm / 1" cubes
1/3 cup (165 ml) Milk , warmed
1 tbsp Butter
2 tbsp Philadelphia Herb And Garlic Cream Cheese, or to taste
Salt and Pepper, to taste
*CHEESE CRUST (OPTIONAL)*
2 tbsp (30g) butter, optional
½ cup Mozzarella Cheddar, shredded
I like to put mozzarella cheddar cheese on my Cottage Pie because it makes the top extra crispy and golden. But any melting cheese will work great.
