Ursula von der Leyen was left without a seat at a summit in Ankara on Tuesday after her two male counterparts took the only available chairs, leaving her to perch on a nearby sofa.
Video captured the moment that Turkish president Erdogan and EU council president Charles Michel took the only two seats available as Von der Leyen uttered an audible 'ahem' - which was heard by both men though neither offered up their seat. As footage of the moment hit social media today, Von der Leyen's spokesman said Turkey had breached protocol by failing to put out a chair for her, but she had decided to stay in the interests of progressing the talks. Among the topics being discussed were women's rights in Turkey, after Erdogan pulled his country out of an EU treaty designed to protect women from violence.
