Vieste (Vìst' in Viestan dialect) is an Italian town of 13 459 inhabitants in the province of Foggia, in Puglia. Renowned seaside resort of the Gargano National Park, with international recognition of blue flag 2023.
Territory
Main articles: Geography of Gargano and Vieste Lighthouse
It is the easternmost town of the Gargano promontory and the province of Foggia. The particular urban dislocation of Vieste is linked to the karst nature of the Gargano promontory, characterized by rocky layers often eroded by marine action.

The nucleus of the town stands on a small rocky peninsula, with a more or less symmetrical shape, characteristic for its three bays separated by two points:
Punta di San Francesco, facing east, steep, raised and rugged rocky: this is where the medieval center is found, since this part of the peninsula offered the best safety requirements. In this part, full of alleys, stairways and arches, you will find most of the most prestigious historical buildings (church of San Francesco, cathedral, Swabian castle, Chianca Amara, etc.).
Punta di Santa Croce, facing north, lower. In this area, relatively flat, the municipality began to expand only towards the nineteenth century. The formation of new districts subsequently led the life of the village (new town hall, municipal park, church of Santa Croce, etc.) to gravitate more and more towards this area. It is on this side that the port of Vieste is found, still important for fishing activities and maritime traffic to the Tremiti Islands, Croatia and Manfredonia.
Vieste Coast
Between the two points is the small beach of Marina Piccola, facing the lighthouse (where there is a partial ban on bathing). To the south of the tip of San Francesco is the long sandy beach of Pizzomunno that starts from the limestone rocks on which the city was built and extends south towards the village of Pugnochiuso, a hamlet of Vieste, born in the 60s by the will of Enrico Mattei according to a modernist architectural design[5], among the most interesting examples of bathing typologies of those years. To the west of the tip of Santa Croce, however, there is the equally long beach of San Lorenzo, which unlike the first is still quite rich in free beaches. It starts from the urban sector built from the nineteenth century (port area) to extend westwards, in the direction of Peschici.
Seismicity
The entire municipal territory of Vieste is an integral part of the Gargano seismic district.
Seismic classification: zone 2 (medium seismicity)[6]
Climate
Main article: Vieste weather station
Vieste has a Mediterranean climate, warm temperate[7], characterized by not abundant rainfall, relatively mild winters (9.2 ° C in January) and summers with high temperatures, but not torrid (in July and August the average maximum temperatures is just under 30 ° C). Below are the average thermal values measured outside the urban area. [8]
In the municipal area is located the homonymous meteorological station, officially recognized by the World Meteorological Organization, currently of automatic type DCP.
