"Why do things become painful?" and "Why do we get injured?"
I want to break down my approach to these difficult questions while also respecting the fact that we don't always know.
Terrible Too's:
- too much
- too soon
- too often
- too fast
Examing activities for the Terrible Too's might better explain why a new injury or painful spot popped up.
Capacity - how much you can tolerate
Load - how much stress you are exposed to.
It is important to note that capacity and load can be physical, emotional. and social. This highlights the complexity of both pain and injuries.
When it comes to activities, exercise, and load we need to think about intensity, duration, and frequency. Together, IDF makes up our dosage. Oftentimes when people get injured, they demonize the movement, not the dosage. As it turns out, the dosage is more often the culprit than the movement.
Intensity - how hard
Duration - how long
Frequency - how often
During the rehab and recovery process, we can adjust the intensity, duration, and frequency variables to keep patients doing what they love while also better preparing them.
