Study of a vertical vortex produced by a divergent current

A vertical vortex formed by discharging water through a circular nozzle at 45 ° from the bottom of a container is studied. This phenomenon was discovered by Enzo Levi in the 1970s.A visualization of the vortex motion is presented using dye and PIV. In particular it is shown how the container walls directly affect the formation of the vortex.The results are compared with the Rankine and Odgaard models. These models were generated to try to predict drainage vortices, the former does not consider viscosity and differs at most by 24% from experimental results. The second does consider viscosity and differs at most by 17% from experimental results, so it is more suitable for studying the vortex discovered by Levi.The authors thank Professors Cervantes De Gortari Jaime and Guzmán Vázquez José Enrique for useful discussions.
