In 1858, Ernst Beyer wrote the lyrics for a tune he called Schlummerpolka. The melodies he probably borrowed from some contemporary tunes, but his version became a real hit with long durability. During the american civil war army brass bands played the tunes both in North and South under the name Slumber-Polka. You still find many versions of it on the net. SP Krichel, our anonymous musician, wrote only the first part down in his manuscript. He added etc. knowing this tune was widely known. This was around 1890 in the Lower Rhinelands. Up in the North, Hjalmar Sandberg learned a version of Schlummerpolka in Rosvik, Norrbotten. It was prescribed the legendary Holmkallara. If you want to learn more about this legend, search for Norrlatar and their recordings with Hjalmar in the 1970ies.
