The empty can test is used to test for rotator cuff disease such as impingement syndrome, tears and subacromial bursitis. The arm is flexed to 90 degrees and abducted about 30-45 degrees from midline. It is internally rotated with the thumb pointed towards the floor as though the patient is holding an empty can. The examiner applies a downward force on the arm while the patient resists. A positive test is pain or weakness.
