Well both are equally important. You cannot ignore the total number of calories that you eat during the day. You have to reduce them to reduce weight, but the type of food that you eat is equally important. You have to have well balanced food that includes a high protein diet. About 60 – 70% of your diet of protein and 15 – 20% carbohydrates and the rest should be fats.
