Surveillance footage released by the New York Police Department this week shows the alleged theft of a bucket of gold flakes worth nearly $1.6 million from an armored truck.
The alleged theft took place on West 48th Street in Manhattan on Sept. 29 when the 86-pound bucket was left unattended by security guards in the back of the parked truck, the New York Times reported.
When one guard left to make a collection, the other went to retrieve his cellphone from the cab. Police said it was during this 20-second window that the suspect committed the crime.
The man saw an opportunity and probably did not know what was inside the bucket, according to police.
Surveillance footage captured the moment the suspect grabbed the bucket from the back of the truck and walked calmly away through the crowds.
Police said the suspect headed east down 48th Street, pausing often to regain his breath, before disappearing near Third Avenue, according to the New York Times. WNBC New York reported that the man got into a white van, but that was not clear from the surveillance footage.
Police described the suspect as a Hispanic man, aged between 50 and 60 years old. He is 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighs 150 pounds and was wearing a black vest, green shirt, blue jeans, and carrying a black messenger bag.
Police believe the man is hiding in Florida and could be in the Orlando or Miami area. The bucket of gold has not been recovered.
