【Pls look at the top comment first】It's time for Canadian melody to hear the voice of Refugee, Myles Hunter. Speaking of Refugee, they are not a prolific band with only two albums released in 1985 and 1987. But Refugee should be a must to be paid more attention to among Canadian melodic rock names. This solo album from Myles Hunger released in 1990 by Island Records can be generally considered as the third release from Refugee under Hunter's name. Different from the albums of Refugee released before, Myles Hunter's solo album did not go along the same music route as Refugee. On the whole, this isn't a typical melodic rock record while it covers more stuffs in the styles of country rock, folk rock as well as more combainations of pop music elements. Among the line-up of this album, some of the former players from Refugee joined this project such as Rob Kennedy and Martyn Jones as well as all the guest musicians who worked together with Hunter to finish recording. We can see a fiddle player from the line-up, that is a very special role.
This song "What Is This Freedom" is one of the melodic rock gems from the album "Northern Union" as well as some people's favourite including me. It is covered with strong but steady pace penetrating the whole song and repeated passages in the tunes of both verse and chorus by simple arrangments but still impressive to hit people in the heart. Besides, I recommend these works such as "Big Dreams","Always Twenty One", "Katie", "Easter" and "After The Fall" from the album as you can catch how rock n roll is well combined with country music. If you generate real empathy with me, all the tunes from "Northern Union" by Myles Hunter are appropriate for vibes of Road Movies like soundtracks.
This is a song about rights and obligations, the concept of freedom to reflect human society. To have a deep thinking about freedom, it is filled with social conscious because "freedom" is a relative term. Humans call for freedom by nature, but freedom is hard to gain in such an unfair world. It is true that some people rule and eat to enjoy their freedom while others are ruled and eaten on struggle against their heavy and painful burden. Freedom is invaluable, so don't take freedom for granted and don't abuse freedom by evil and depraved mind. Freedom should be based on equity between rights and obligations and should never be put on others' suffering. Even freedom never exsists when people's throats are shoved down since it is seized by the power hierarchy. Just think about...
