We rigged up the new GoPro HERO3+ Black Edition and the current, market leading GoPro HERO3 Black to an MTB with K-Edge Go BIG bar mounts and headed off to a local trail to test the two cameras in a head-to-head to see which is the best action camera on the market.
The footage was recorded at varied frame rates (FPS) and dimensions simultaneously on both cameras to test the capabilities of the two cameras. The edit timebase is 30 FPS and all footage has been scaled at the video encoding stage to fit into a 1080p edit sequence as this seems the most logical given the assorted recording sizes.
The clapping is to allow frame accurate sync of the picture between the two cameras.
The battery on the HERO3+ fared considerable better that the HERO3, although only the HERO3+ battery was new, so it wasn't necessarily a completely even test.
The shooting modes tested on both cameras are:
1080p 30 FPS
1080p 60 FPS
1440x1080 48 FPS - ProTune (graded)
2.7K 30 FPS - ProTune (graded)
4K 12 FPS
720p 120 FPS
720p 120/100 FPS - ProTune (graded) (wide HERO3 vs. SuperView - HERO3+)
720p 60 FPS (Auto Low Light - HERO3+)
