The world land speed record was broken by a steam-powered car. American race car driver, Fred Marriott, driving a Stanley Land Speed Record Car reached 127.659 mph.

Such was the danger involved in driving a steam car at such speeds, Marriott was selected because he was a bachelor.

The land speed record for a steam car stood until 2009.
