Learn how to say in Linhainese: "Hi!" "What's your name?" "Nice to meet you!" Linhainese - a RARE Chinese Dialect - is a unique dialect (or sub-branch) of Wu Chinese, which one of the major branches of Chinese language.
China has many branches of languages and dialects, which includes Mandarin (used throughout China), Cantonese (best known for being used in Hong Kong), and Wu Chinese. Wu Chinese is used in the South Western part of China that includes Shanghai and Zhejiang Provice. Wu Chinese has many different dialects that are distinct to various regions. Wu Chinese dialects, however, are not like the various accents that exists in English. Wu Chinese dialects are so different that it is better to describe them as different languages. For example, a person speaking Shanghainese would not be able to understand the language dialects that are spoken in Zhejiang.
As Mandarin is the official language of China and Wu Chinese is not taught at schools, many branches of Wu Chinese are in the process of "language death." As less and less people speak these languages, most dialects of Wu Chinese are in danger of disappearing in the coming decades.
Linhai is a small town in a city called Taizhou in Zhejiang province. Linhai has our own special dialect (or sub-branch) of Wu Chinese called “Linhai-hua” or “Linhainese.” Already, many young people born in Linhai can only speak Mandarin and cannot speak Linhainese. Like many other dialects of Wu Chinese, in next few generations, Linhainese may become a forgotten language.
We created LinhaiTube channel with the goal of preserving and passing down our unique and beautiful language to the future generations. For generations, Linhainese and other sub-branches of Wu Chinese have been passed down orally. We will continue this legacy by using YouTube as our platform.
