Healing Wishes & Love to Ray of Ray’s Candy Store East Village After Brutal Attack #newyorkcity #nyc

Our thoughts and healing ❤️‍🩹 wishes go to our friend Ray Alvarez, the owner of the iconic Ray’s Candy Store in Avenue A in the East Village, who was brutally attacked yesterday at 3 AM outside his shop. Ray, who is 90 years old and his employee Gabe were standing outside the shop on a break when they were approached by a man who asked if they wanted to buy seltzer water. After Ray politely turned down the man’s offer, he attacked Ray with what has been described as a belt with a rock attached to it, causing Ray to be knocked to the ground with a bleeding gash to his temple and black eye. Ray despite being knocked unconscious from his extensive injuries, refused to go to the hospital and was back at work 1 hour later. He initially did not even want to press charges but was convinced ti file a police report but the attacker is still at large (anyone with info please reach out to Crime Stoppers at 1-809-577-TIPS.

@rayscandystore was founded in 1974 by Ray after he fled the Iranian navy and saved enough money to purchase the existing candy store which at the time had a monthly rent of $125. For many years, it was one the few stores near Tompkins Square Park that stayed open 24 hours (Ray today still stays open until 4 AM) and Ray was even working behind the counter during the famous riot in 1988. Ray is a generous and sweet man, who always gives our dog, Hudson, hot dogs when we stop by to visit.
