오미크론 확산으로 전세계 항공 7천 편 넘게 결항
During the Christmas holiday weekend, one of the busiest travel times of the year... airlines were forced to cancel thousands of flights... due to staffing issues linked to COVID-19.
Bae Eun-ji reports.
Thousands of flights were canceled over the Christmas weekend, as Omicron cases surged across the world,... forcing tens of thousands of Christmas travelers to change their plans.
According to flight tracker Flight Aware, over 7-thousand-200 flights were canceled worldwide... in the three-day period from Christmas Eve to the 26th of December.
Of them, more than 2-thousand were flights involving U.S. airports.
The cancelations were caused by staffing problems at airlines, with pilots and cabin crew calling in sick or needing to quarantine after exposure to COVID-19.
This caused chaos at the airport... and the stress of spending hours standing in line and on the phone trying to rebook flights.
"So we rebooked."
"Yeah, we scrambled."
The U.S. is currently seeing a daily average of more than 200-thousand COVID-19 infections for the first time in almost a year,... and the Omicron variant accounts for the vast majority of them.
South Korea's Korean Air has also been told to temporarily suspend flights to Hong Kong,... after five passengers tested positive for COVID-19 after arriving there last Thursday.
The Hong Kong government ordered a two-week suspension of Korean Air flights to its territory,... citing its antivirus protocol.
A Korean Air official said that the company has abided by all the necessary virus-related measures,... and will clarify its stance to Hong Kong authorities.
