We’re going “old school” and using a homemade sugar loaf and an antique sugar nipper to stir-up this classic Old Fashioned. If you were drinking in the late 19th Century, the sugar in your cupboard or local tavern would have been in the form of a sugar loaf (or sugar cone). More aggravating than the easy-to-dissolve granulated sugar we reach for today, it explains why cocktail books of the era called for muddling the sugar. Though it’s a bit more work making and using a sugar loaf to create this cocktail, it is a fun effort and provides for a nostalgic way to make this classic. Check out the video on how to make your own sugar loaf and our Cocktail College video on the history of the Old Fashioned. Cheers!
