Membrane filtration methods have been developed and used to detect the presence of water-transmitted parasites such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia in surface and treated water samples. The water sample is first passed through a filter system able to capture small infective cyst or oocysts stages of these parasites prior to fixative preservation and detection of the samples.
