Yellow is more closely associated with flowers than moths. The Imperial Moth has yellow wings with pinkish/purple spots to conceal the moth among the tree leaves. The Imperial moth seeks cover among yellowing, forest leaves during their two week lifespan. Their sole life mission is reproduction.
Caterpillars of the Imperial moth have a ferocious appearance in their youth because of the twig-like projections on their bodies. As the larvae develop they mature into large 5” caterpillars that can be orange, dark brown, burgundy or green. This is the most diverse color range of any of the silkworm larvae. Another unique characteristic of the Imperial caterpillar is that it pupates underground whereas most silkworm moths make an above ground silky cocoon. This moth is a 4-7” beauty that is a joy to see!
