The working principle of a DC shunt motor revolves around the interaction of magnetic fields and electric currents. In essence, it operates on the principle of Lorentz force, where the interaction between a magnetic field and an electric current results in a mechanical force.
Field winding: A shunt motor has two windings - armature winding and field winding. The field winding is connected in parallel (shunt) with the armature winding and is supplied with a constant voltage. This creates a constant magnetic field within the motor.
Armature winding: When a voltage is applied across the armature winding, a current flows through it. This current interacts with the magnetic field created by the field winding, generating a force on the armature conductors according to the Lorentz force law.
Torque generation: The interaction between the magnetic fields of the armature and the field winding causes the armature to rotate. This rotation produces mechanical torque, which is utilized to drive the load connected to the motor shaft.
Speed control: The speed of the DC shunt motor can be controlled by varying either the applied voltage or the resistance in the field circuit. Increasing the voltage increases the speed, while decreasing it slows down the motor.
