We get occasional emails from artists who say they are making less money from their music since the industry switched to streaming. So we decided to find out what exactly each streaming company pays.
Here’s what Tony did: He logged into his personal CD Baby account and looked at what his music got paid over the past 90 days by each of the streaming providers: Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, Tidal, even YouTube.
Three things are clear:
1. Streaming doesn’t pay much at all
2. You still need to be there (unless you want to be anonymous); that’s where the listeners are
3. CDs, vinyl, merch, and live concerts are perhaps more important than ever to help drive income
This means that if you want to maximize your income as an artist you have to offer your fans the physical products they want to buy. Otherwise you’re leaving money on the table.
