ALOHA! It's our first time in Hawaii! When we first started dating over 10 years ago, we told ourselves that we would travel to Hawaii for our honeymoon... then Covid-19 happened. This Hawaii trip was back in August 2022 and we had the most unreal time visiting O'ahu and Maui. Unfortunately, we don't have any video clips of us surfing but that was also such a memorable experience. Highly recommend booking with Maui Surf Girls!! We booked a 2-4 hour surf package. We rode some pretty awesome waves and ate some barrels lol but the package included photography by a professional surfer/surf photographer.
Due to our tight itinerary, we were able to do Road to Hana in one day, however, most people do 2 days to not rush/enjoy every stop... staying in Hana for one night. It is very doable to do this venture in one day but you just need to be more mindful of which stops you want to see. As you saw, we ran into some challenges as the Hāna Highway (HI-360) has 620 curves and 59 bridges. There are lots of accidents on this highway despite many locals making this trip every single day (impressive!!!). We left as early as we could but still ended up driving on the HI-360 back to Lahaina in the dark. HIGHLY recommend purchasing/downloading the Maui-Road to Hana Shaka app on your phone. It's a guided tour you listen to throughout your Road to Hana road trip. It's incredibly informative and provides you directions, history, shortcuts, popular local joints, tips, parking information, and recommended detours/stops. We could not have done this roady without it because there was no signal most of the drive so it was very helpful, making our Road to Hana experience that much more memorable.
We did really early mornings back-to-back from Road to Hana straight to Haleakalā for the sunrise hike. At this point, we were running on 3 hours of sleep and ended up pulling to the side of the cliff off the road on the way back down from the volcano to take a quick nap afterwards but IT WAS SO WORTH IT! We woke up at 2am to drive 2 hours to this volcano from Lahaina. Be careful driving as there are many accidents from wild deer. From seeing thousands of stars in the night sky to watching the sun rise with our heads above the clouds… this has been one of the most beautiful things we’ve ever experienced.
Fun fact: The solar telescope at the Haleakala High Altitude Observatory is currently the largest solar telescope in the world. Also, Haleakala hosts over 103 endangered species and is taller than Mt. Everest by 672 feet from the sea floor to the summit.
Originally, we wanted to break up these series by doing a daily Hawaii vlog but unfortunately, we don't really have the time haha. Anyways, we hope you all enjoy it as we tried to fit in as many excursions, food, and activities as we could during our 1-week visit to Maui. We will definitely be back!
Take care,
J&M
