Helping patients manage their referral online
• More referrals are being made electronically with the NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS).
• Using e-RS means practices have the chance to save more time by empowering patients to book their own appointments online.
• The e-RS ‘Manage Your Referral’ website is safe and secure and easy to use. It allows patients to book, check, change and cancel their outpatient appointments online without help from the practice.
• Patients can take control and book their own appointment on a convenient date and time and at their preferred hospital or clinic if there is a choice. This means no more worried patients contacting or visiting the practice to find out what is happening with their appointment.

NHS e-Referral Service. Putting patients in control of their outpatient appointments. There are now two ways for patients to access the benefits of the NHS e-Referral service online: through the NHS website, or by using the NHS App — the simple and secure way to access NHS services on a smartphone, tablet, or computer. Only around a third of patients are aware they can book online. GP practices can now email booking referral information to patients who have an NHS login, which removes the need to print and post booking information. Forty per cent of appointment bookings are still made by practice staff. Patients can manage their referral within the NHS e-Referral Service 24/7 to book, check, change and cancel their first hospital or clinic outpatient appointments. This will save the practice time and money, whilst empowering patients to book and manage their own appointments, and can also help to reduce hospital "did not attend" rates. Practices should review their NHS e-Referral Service processes to take advantage of this functionality. For more information on the NHS e-Referral Service, go to: nhs.uk/referrals or visit: digital.nhs.uk/nhsapp to find out more about the NHS App.
