Cardiovascular disease appears to play a prominent role in the COVID-19 pandemic. Patients with cardiovascular risk factors and pre-existing cardiovascular disease seem to have an increased risk of a poor outcome and, even in the absence of underlying cardiovascular disease, patients with COVID-19 have been reported to develop cardiovascular and thrombotic complications.

Sufficient evidence is currently not available to guide clinicians in the management of these patients and to accelerate knowledge of the role of cardiovascular disease in the COVID-19 pandemic, standardised and coordinated data collection on a large scale is of pivotal importance. Several initiatives were launched during the pandemic to investigate these risks and the impact of COVID-19 on cardiovascular patients and the development of cardiovascular complications due to COVID-19 infection.
