Ed Furgol made a scrambling par on the final hole, playing his second shot up an adjoining fairway, to win his only major championship. The first U.S. Open on Baltusrol’s Lower Course nearly went to a playoff, but Gene Littler missed an 8-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole, and Dick Mayer, needing a par to tie Furgol, finished with a double-bogey 7. Littler, the 1953 U.S. Amateur champion, finished second by one stroke at 5-over 285, six months after turning professional. Milestones: The championship is nationally televised for the first time. A U.S. Open course is roped from tee to green for the first time.
