This is Part 5 of my 5 video series on Chris Watts.
This video is all about Nathan (Nate) Trinastich (Chris Watt's neighbour) who assisted police when he showed them his video surveillance footage. Nate's early action resulted in swift justice for Shanann, Bella, CeCe and Niko.
Nate is an unassuming character who would have had no idea what he was about to be swept up into..... His red hat on backwards, his intense and evaluative gaze – his rationally systematic thought processes and his spontaneous and accurate analysis of the small details of the situation. His capacity to apply logic and rational thought, was both impressive and – we now know, spot on!
Nate said the things that made Chris’s behaviour suspicious to him was:
• Chris never really looked at the video footage – Nate said if it was him in that situation he would be intensely looking, trying to see if anyone came near or in the house, if Shannan left, etc – But Nate said Chris was distracted and in a way, disinterested by the CCTV footage
• Nate said Chris’s body language was off – he noticed Chris swaying back and forth, his hands on his head and presenting in a way that Nate concluded was “not right at all”
• He also thought it was perculair that Chris persisted in explaining he had to bring certain tools out to the car and seemed to be overly descriptive in that regard. Nate thought Chris seemed to be making a big deal over something, in normal circumstances would be inconsequential – and he was right.
In this video I will have a closer look at Nate's behaviour and explain, through a lens of Social Psychology, why it is interesting to me.
The Bystander Effect is a phenomenon whereby many people don’t offer help and support, don’t like to get involved in these kind of situations. They just hope someone else will take care of the situation.
There are sticky-beaks too - and in this age of cell phones and pocket-cameras, many people will be quick to video the event, but less likely to stick their necks out to help! Nate may not have known how much help he would provide this case, but point is - he was highly instrumental in the swift arrest and conviciton of Chris Watts.
There are some other incredibly interesting and wellknown examples of the Bystander Effect, such as the violent removal of a normal everday well behaved passenger (a doctor) from a United Airlines flight - simply because it was overbooked.
I want to end this video, which is intended to be a little lighter than parts 1-4 with a shoutout, and THANK YOU to Nickole, to Nate and to the community that all assisted in the quick arrest of CW and helped bring justice to the short, but beautiful lives of Shanann, Bella, CeCe and Niko.
May they Rest in Peace.
