This is the first release from a series of 14 videos filmed in beautiful locations across Bali. On this day we traveled to Pura Ulun Danu Tamblingan in the mountains of Norther Bali. I was a real adventure filming here with a spectacular team! I first decided to film these videos in order to highlight my Kanun (middle eastern harp) style and to pre-release some of the 70 songs I wrote in Bali over 6 months I spent there.
At the time I was recovering from 2 knee surgeries and The island provided perfect place to healing and find inspiration. This is the covers I recorded, my favorite Nine Inch Nails song also sung by Johnny Cash. The Kanun is an ancient instrument played in may countries around the Middle East. It has 78 strings and is designed to play microtonal intervals as well as wester 12 tone scales.
My first contact and inspiration to learn kanun came while living in Turkey from my teacher Celalettin Aksoy who performs with the official Sufi Whirling Dervish Orchestra in Konya Turkey. Konya or Biblical Iconium is final resting place of 13th century mystic poet Jalal Al-Din Muhammad Rumi.
