Cerati and Soda Stereo were the first Spanish language rock band to headline in the United States.
Gustavo Cerati, the former lead singer of one Latin America's biggest bands, Soda Stereo has died on Thursday.
Cerati fell into a coma after suffering a stroke following a show in Caracas since 2010. The Argentine never woke.
According to Argentine media reports, the singer died from respiratory failure.
With Soda Stereo, Cerati recorded 7 albums from the 1980s onwards, becoming one of the most influential Latin American rock bands.
Their sound was initially influence by new wave music, such as The Police, Television and Talking Heads. The band welcomed an ever changing style, which used pop as a base but also brought in sounds from new wave, ska, reggae, soul and electronica.
Cerati and Soda Stereo were also at least partly responsible for opening up the Latin American rock music to other market, selling millions of albums in the United States.
The band was the winner of the inaugural Latin American MTV legend prize, recognizing the Argentine band´s influential role.
Cerati also sang with legendary Argentine folk singer, Mercedes Sosa.
In August the beloved musician turned 55.
