The ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Originating in Wuhan in Hubei, China, in early December 2019,[4] the global outbreak was characterised as a pandemic that can be controlled by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 11 March 2020.[5] As of 14 March, over 150,000 cases have been reported in around 150 countries and territories; more than 5,600 people have died from the disease while over 73,000 have recovered.[2] Regions affected by major outbreaks include mainland China, South Korea, Iran, Italy and Spain.[6][7] The WHO considers Europe the current epicentre of the pandemic.[8]
