Explore with me with as i fly my phantom 4 over an old shipyard in Napa California. This site began in in 1920 as Basalt Rock Co. In the 40's it began building ships for the Navy and war. My interest here though is this big American Crane. Abandoned on this 154 acre site it stands tall over the land. It is home to a barn owl, an Osprey Nest, and various other small birds. In the video we see an American Kestrel too! I fly up close and get some great video aerial footage of this old crane. So follow along with me and see how awesome this DJI phantom series drone performs!
UPDATE TO INFORMATION IN THIS VIDEO
Thanks a bunch to the man who emailed me the following information about the history of this location. I have omitted his name but here is the email.
I served aboard (1983-1984) the USS Conserver ARS 39. Built in 1945.
She was built there. The four Drydocks are where the ships were built.
Then water was let in to float them after construction.
The Conserver was partially outfitted before being towed to Mare Island Shipyard for final outfitting.
(The Napa River isn't deep enough to navigate once the ships were fully loaded)
Our remaining members would be most appreciative of any living folks that worked at Shipyard Acres, Mare Island or have any family albums from the 1940-2004 time period. Should you meet anyone. There were about 45 Ships of our class built in Napa. As well as small Barges.
