Andrew Knight presents a talk at The Science of Consciousness 2020 conference entitled “Refuting Algorithmic Consciousness: Why Mind Uploading and Conscious Computers are Impossible.” In a condensed version of a more through explanation, he shows how Special Relativity prevents the existence of physical copies of conscious states: specifically, why two instances of physical copies of conscious states located at different points in spacetime, whether located spacelike or timelike, would require impermissible superluminal signaling or backward causation. He shows that because conscious states cannot be copied or repeated, consciousness cannot be algorithmic and cannot be created by a digital computer. He presents some possible explanatory hypotheses, several of which are related to quantum mechanics, such as Quantum No-Cloning. The video shows why mind uploading is impossible, computers cannot be conscious, and consciousness cannot be algorithmic. More information can be found at his Brain In A Vat website, www.inavat.com.
