Restoring these tools hid fatal flaws, watch and learn how to spot this kind of deception.
If you bought either of these tools, you would be ripped off !!!
I offer to give away this machete as a cool wall hanger for free, because that's all it is good for. ***Details below.***
Tool 1
Was a machete that was obviously trashed and it looked like the previous owner had been hitting against something he shouldn't have. My first clue was that the warped edge straightened very easily because it had no spring. I confirmed that with a bend demonstration and comparison with a good blade.
My deception in this restore job was fully straightening it and then putting a nice clean edge on it. I left the blade rusty and only added a little linseed oil to make it look a little better. You don’t want to take that rust off or it might show where it was worked LOL.
Someone buying it would think it was one of the good vintage ones but the blade very quickly would have ended up back in the original state.
Tool 2
The Adze was also a deceptive restore and could be a disappointing surprise to a luckless punter.
Perhaps those cracks were in the cast all along and are not structural, but they look really nasty and if I knew about them I would not have bought it.
The thing with buying painted tools, in particular painted cast tools like vices, is that you don’t know what’s under the paint, so keep that in the front of your mind when buying said tools. Careful examination of this restore job will give it away, but you need to know what you are looking for.
1. There is a spot where I missed some rust pits with the filler.
2. There is a spot where the filler was not perfectly feathered out.
Therefore detecting filler is a massive red flag to make you think twice about a purchase.
I really wanted an Adze and it was disappointed finding the cracks in this one.
Were they really that bad or could I have fixed them?
Perhaps I should put the Adze to test and see if it holds up?
