My thoughts:
Ballheads are not an essential part of most wildlife photography however they can be extremely useful and versatile. They can be used in combination with side-mounted gimbal heads or improvised as a tripod-mounted gimbal in a pinch. One really useful application is to get super low when mounted to a ground pod, or flattened out tripod.
