Degree of unsaturation or Double bond equivalent or Index of Hydrogen deficiency.
• With decrease of two Hydrogen Degree of unsaturation of a compound increases by one.
• Every individual ring contributes in one Degree of unsaturation.
• One double bind contributes in one degree of unsaturation.
For complex compounds with 3-D structure degree of unsaturation can be found by the formula N-1 where N is number of faces in the structure.
Degree of unsaturation of Benzene is four. Three points of degree of unsaturation is contributed by double bond and one by ring.
