I've been watching hockey since age one. Never in the history of the NHL has a rookie played his first ever NHL game, against their rival, shortly after his physical, the final game of the season, the night after elimination, just as the national sportscaster - Bob Cole - retires after 50 years, and put up a hat trick, tying the game with two minutes left, hats showering down, in only 11 minutes of ice-time.
And, then he got the game winning goal on the last shot of the season, in a shootout. The young prospect, unveiled by the most famous organization in hockey on game 82, simply to say thank you to the fans. 49 shots apiece! That was wilder than Auston Matthews' four-goal first game, who was looking on, and brought a tear to my eyes. If only my mom were alive to see that. That was a Rocket Richard entrance to the NHL.
