Hi Runners,
Running Cadence is one of the most important factors in preventing running injuries and improving performance. Having a high Cadence makes your Running form smoother and softer naturally, which promotes better shock absorption and less vertical impact forces. Here are my top 3 tips for improving your Running cadence:
1. Music
Using music is a fun and effective way to control your running cadence.
2. Strides
Strides are great for improving your neuromuscular connection (how well your muscles respond to the brain signals your send), and your running form overall. If you are not used to doing strides, I recommend the following:
5 x 200m High cadence, fast sprints and jog back easily. Try to be in contact with the ground as little as possible.
3. Plyometrics
I can't highlight the importance of strength and plyometrics work enough. I am not asking you to do complicated exercises that take a lot of coordination and training to execute correctly. Simple exercises like jumping up and down a bench, while focussing on being as reactive on the ground as possible are more than enough. Focus on the fundamentals!
Finally, my personal little bonus tip is to imagine and mimic a better runner in front of you, while you are running. Especially when you get into the thick of a long run, visualizing someone like E. Kipchoge in front of you not only naturally improves your cadence, but also might give you some energy.
It works for me :)
Thanks for watching and reading!
Keep it up,
Rapha
