In a recent video I announced my decision to quit pro photography as a career and it's apparently an issue that is impacting a lot of people judging by all the comments. I've made 180-something videos here on this YouTube channel and the one where I'm throwing in the towel is the one that blows up! It's good though because I feel like the choice to quit pro photography is really hard and needs more discussion.
01:25 Am I just quitter with lousy work?
02:04 Documentary photography v weddings and headshots
03:10 How I got started
05:05 My work sucks but I shot for Duracell/ Procter and Gamble
06:00 Photography as a full time employee
07:00 Return to freelance for creative freedom
08:00 starting over...again
09:00 should YOU quit professional photography?
Most of the information on photography on YouTube is about how to make it and much of that information comes from professionals who are selling instruction in one form or another. It's not really profitable to share the other side of the coin--what happens when you try for years and even meet with some success but it just won't float a family.
We all give pro photography a go because we love photography. I don't think too many people get far down the path of professional photography because it seems like a good way to make a lot of money! That is awesome that we live in a time when we have the technology and resources to have a creative career at our fingertips-but it also can be hard to know when to pull the plug since we got into it for love.
One comment I've gotten a lot is something to this effect: "It's impossible to be a professional photographer these days because everyone who has an iPhone is a photographer"
In this video I share what happened in my situation which actually has had very little to do with the saturation of iphone photography in the normal entry points in the world of pro photography (wedding, real estate, headshots etc.) I started as a documentary photographer shooting Nat Geo style adventure projects and to be fair I met with some success along the way. That's what kept me going for six years, but the end result has been that while I probably could keep going down this path the question of "Should I put my family through this?" is looming larger.
I have no desire to keep others from trying professional photography. I am really thankful that I had a chance to try for as long as I did. I simply think that it's equally important to look at the off-ramp early in the process of going pro. Failure to do that could turn your love for creating imagery into a burden and no one wants that!
